The University of Kansas Libraries invite applications from entry-level or experienced librarians for the position of Social Sciences Librarian.  The successful applicant will join a team of individuals engaged in building print and digital collections and in providing specialized reference services, instruction, consultation services and outreach activities in person and digitally for students, faculty, researchers and staff.  The Social Sciences Librarian reports to the Coordinator of the Social Sciences Council within the University Libraries.  Successful candidate will be familiar with new technologies and their applications for information and instructional services and will have a commitment to innovative and effective user-centered services.

Responsibilities

  • Develop collections and strengthen user services by developing strong working relationships with social sciences faculty and students to support the research and teaching pertaining to those disciplines assigned for liaison responsibilities. 

 

  • Select and manage the budget for research materials in assigned disciplines, with emphasis upon materials that will directly support faculty and graduate student research. Work cooperatively with other subject specialists in the development of an interdisciplinary collection supporting teaching and research in related social sciences and humanities disciplines.

 

  • Participate in campus-wide information literacy instruction programs serving students in first-year-experience programs, general education programs and advanced courses in liaison disciplines.

 

  • Share responsibilities for providing information and general reference services in person, by telephone and electronically  (email & IM)

 

  •  Provide support for faculty and students in the use of social sciences materials through instruction, in-depth reference and web-based communication. 

 

  • Partner with colleagues in the collections and instruction areas to develop and present a program of instructional initiatives directed at extending staff and user knowledge in areas of specialization.

 

  • Foster faculty/Libraries collaborations in a wide range of Libraries initiatives, including KU ScholarWorks, curriculum integration of technology, and scholarly publishing opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain web based guides or resources and use established and emerging technologies to deliver library services to users.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association
  • Academic degree with major or minor in one  of the fields of the social sciences disciplines as evidenced by verification of education
  • Excellence in written communication as demonstrated by quality of application materials
  • Demonstrated knowledge of information resources pertinent to the social sciences, as shown in previous job experience or course work in library and information science program  
  • Demonstrated experience with current and emerging trends and technologies in academic libraries as evidenced in application materials

Preferred

Preferred:
  • An advanced degree in some aspect of the social sciences.
  • Work experience in an academic or research library.
  • Demonstrated excellence in oral communication skills.
  • Familiarity with contemporary social sciences curricula, including computational research programs.
  • Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse faculty, students, and staff.
  • Familiarity with collection development methodologies in research libraries, trends in digital library development and principles of scholarly communication
  • Knowledge of information resources (print and electronic) in the social sciences, including bibliographic and full-text resources.
  • Strong commitment to instruction and public service
  •  Recent experience in teaching, library instruction or technology training and knowledge of  instructional theory, philosophy, and practice
  •  Proficiency in a western European language
  •  Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT:

This is a 12-month, tenure-track, library faculty appointment. Librarians at the University of Kansas are members of the University faculty. Librarians are evaluated annually first and foremost on the performance of professional responsibilities. In addition, librarians are expected to participate in, and are evaluated on, research, and service to the Libraries, the University, and the profession.

The University of Kansas Libraries constitute a major academic and research resource supporting 25,000 students and 1,300 faculty.  The Libraries’ extensive collections are housed in six library facilities in Lawrence and one in Kansas City and are cooperatively linked with the university law and medical school libraries.
