Event Title: Hot Topic Tuesday: Libraries to Go
Where: Hillcrest Community Center, 10401 Hillcrest Road, KCMO 64134
Tuesday, April 13, 2010
Time: 8:30 AM - 10:30 AM CST
Description:

Hot Topic Tuesday:

Libraries have long been concerned with bringing more people to their buildings. MCPL's innovative Library-To-Go concept turns that idea on its head, instead bringing the library to the people.

While not a replacement for the traditional library, Library-To-Go offers many library services to those who do not or cannot set foot in a branch. Computer access, material reservation and pickup, and a revolutionary system to present a browsing collection make Library-To-Go a valuable tool for expanding libraries service.

Library-To-Go: It's all about bringing the library to the people.

Moderators:

Amy Caviness is the Electronic Resources Manager for Mid-Continent Public Library and is the project implementation manager for MCPL's Libraries-To-Go project.

Steve Potter is the Assistant Director at Mid-Continent Public Library and was primarily responsible for the project vision along with hardware, software, and cooperative agreement negotiations for the Libraries-To-Go program.

Event Title: Rediscover the Classics
Where: Kansas city Kansas West Wyandotte Branch
Thursday, April 15, 2010
Time: 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM CST
Description:

Italo Calvino said "We use the words "classics" for books that are treasured by those who have read and loved them; but they are treasured no less by those who have the luck to read them for the first time in the best conditions to enjoy them" and "A classic is a book that has never finished saying what it has to say." Both sayings are very true. Most libraries have tons of classics on their bookshelves. Why not put them to some use? Using classics for programs tends to bring out the closet classics readers (although reading classics is nothing to be ashamed about) and it introduces others to books they may not have heard of. We will discuss what makes a book a classic, how to collect classics books and how to use classics in book discussion groups plus how to specifically use Jane Austen (one of the patron saints of librarians) for library programming.

9:30 - 9:45 Introduction
9:45 - 10:30 Defining a Classic - Jenny Ellis and Terri Clark
What makes a classic? Are there certain guidelines? Jenny will discuss these things and also highlight some of the best and worst cover art for classics.
10:30 - 11:15 Collecting Classics - Kira Green
Kira's program will include choosing the best editions and titles for a general public library collection. She'll cover how to identify a version that will be attractive to the general reader vs. an academic reader and which authors/titles lend themselves to a general collection with broad appeal.
11:15 - 11:45 Break
11:45-12:15 Using Classics in book discussion groups - Sarah Gamble
Sarah will talk about incorporating classics into book discussion groups, discussion questions, discussion pairing, and her experiences with using classics.
12:15-12:45 Programming Jane Austen - Jenny Ellis
Programming with classics as a focal point can be easy, cost effective, informative, and entertaining.
12:45-1:00 Closing

Instructors:

Kira Green is the Assistant Branch Manager at Mid-Continent Public Library's Parkville branch. A self confessed "control freak," Kira is a vocal advocate for reading the classics - especially Dostoyevsky. Kira's undergraduate degree is in Classics with a focus in latin translation and she has her Master's degree in Library Science.

Sarah Gamble works as a Library Assistant at Mid-Continent Public Library's Blue Springs North branch. She has been leading their book discussion group for 15 years and incorporates a classic into their reading list every year.

Kaite Mediatore Stover is the Head of Readers' Services for the Kansas City Public Library. She is a regular guest on the Book Doctor's segment of the Walt Bodine Show and writs the She Reads column for Booklist magazine. Her first book, The Readers' Advisory Handbook, was published by ALA Editions in February.

Jenny Ellis has a BA in English Literature from Missouri Western State University and her MLS from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She is a lifetime member of the Jane Austen Society of North America. She has over 10 years worth of public library experience. Her favorite classics authors include Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell, L.M. Montgomery, Louisa May Alcott and Charlotte Bronte.
