Event Title: Introduction to Excel for Libraries

Description:

Introduction to Excel 2007 for Librarians

This workshop will introduce the basic components of Microsoft Excel, including data entry and output, sorting spreadsheet data, basic formulas, creating charts and graphs, and printing spreadsheet data. Participants will interact with sample applications of Excel for library use, such as budgeting, book orders, usage statistics, collection development/analysis, mailing lists, time sheets and scheduling.

This is not a class for computer novices. Participants must have at least beginner-level computer and Microsoft Windows proficiency. Some Microsoft Excel experience is helpful but not necessary

Working with examples of spreadsheets applicable to libraries, after this workshop participants will be able to:
· Understand the basics of spreadsheets.
· Create simple spreadsheets.
· Alphabetize, sort, and manipulate spreadsheet data.
· Write spreadsheet formulas.
· Create charts and graphs.
· Print spreadsheet data.


Instructor:

Beth Willis is the Special Projects Coordinator for the Kansas city Metroplitan Library & Information Network. She has been a librarian for 23 years, working primarily in library automation, technology, and technical services. She has coordinated numerous library retrospective conversion projects, the implementation and management of integrated online library systems, grant writing, and the development and presentation of library staff development workshops on technical topics. Beth obtained an MLS from the School of Library and Information Science at the State University of New York at Albany.

Event Title: Basic Reference Workshp

Description:

This workshop has been designed for front-line support staff. You have the opportunity to examine many different print reference resources and discover how to effectively utilize them to help the library patron. The reference interview process will be included in this workshop along with role playing scenarios and a reference treasure hunt. Sources covered include: dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, almanacs, yearbooks, directories, geographical sources, biographical sources, basic indexes and abstracts.

Farrukh Hasan is the Public Services Librarian at the Hooley Bundschu Library at Avila University.

Pam Jenkins is a Reference Librarian for the Kansas City Public Library System.

The 2010 United We Read Committee has selected "Hotel on the corner of Bitter and Sweet" by Jamie Ford. Each year the Metro Area Reader's Round Table (MARRT) selects a book for the United We Read Community Wide Reading Program. The goal of this program is to encourage reading and communication within our community. Topics covered will include:

The world is a stressful place to live and work. Customers are easily irritated and increasingly irate and hostile. Often it isn't even anything you did, it's just "life." Yet, you must stay calm AND calm your stressed-out customer.

Instructor:

Jeremy R Hall, J.D. is a Human Resources Consultant for Creative Business Solutions, Inc. Jeremy can provide human resource products and services to assist organizations in the prevention and handling of sexual harassment and discrimination complaints.

Jeremy has conducted training for public and private businesses throughout the State of Kansas on discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace. For two and one half years he was responsible for all training conducted by the Kansas Human Rights Commission. Jeremy also teaches a complete customer service curriculum for Mid-America Regional Council for municipalities in the Kansas City area and presents at conferences on this these topics and others.
He has spoken to audiences large and small and has a presentation style that captivates the audience. His presentation style has been referred to as both informative and entertaining.

Jeremy has a Juris Doctorate from Washburn University School of Law. He is completing his thesis for a Masters in Criminal Justice from Washburn. He earned a Bachelors of Arts in History and Political Science from Southwest Baptist University.

Jeremy is currently a member of the Topeka YWCA Career Assistance Network Board of Advisors, and on the Kansas Fair Housing Project Team.
