Synopsis from Barnes & Noble
A moving story of the remarkable bond between a journalist in search of a story and a homeless, classically trained musician-destined to be a major motion picture from DreamWorks, starring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr.

When Steve Lopez saw Nathaniel Ayers playing his heart out on a two-string violin on Los Angeles' skid row, he found it impossible to walk away. More than thirty years earlier, Ayers had been a promising classical bass student at Juilliard-ambitious, charming, and also one of the few African-Americans-until he gradually lost his ability to function, overcome by schizophrenia. When Lopez finds him, Ayers is homeless, paranoid, and deeply troubled, but glimmers of that brilliance are still there.

Over time, Steve Lopez and Nathaniel Ayers form a bond, and Lopez imagines that he might be able to change Ayers's life. Lopez collects donated violins, a cello, even a stand-up bass and a piano; he takes Ayers to Walt Disney Concert Hall and helps him move indoors. For each triumph, there is a crashing disappointment, yet neither man gives up. In the process of trying to save Ayers, Lopez finds that his own life is changing, and his sense of what one man can accomplish in the lives of others begins to expand in new ways.

Poignant and ultimately hopeful, The Soloist is a beautifully told story of friendship and the redeeming power of music.

Event Title: Librarian 411 Forum
Where: Mid-Continent Public Library Administrative Center
Wednesday, March 25, 2009
Time: 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM CST
Description:

Librarian411.org is a free web-based training for library staff, created by the Missouri Department of Mental Health and the Missouri State Library with funding from the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). This library training was developed to help front-line library workers better serve patrons with mental illness and/or developmental disabilities. The training was created using input from focus groups consisting of public library staff members, mental health consumers and mental health professionals. The content of the program reflects many hours of collaboration and interaction between Department of Mental Health (DMH) librarians and the "in-the-trenches" front-line workers of many Missouri libraries.

The live presentation will provide participants with basic information and practical tips about serving customers whose needs may be different than the average library user. We will present facts about mental illness and the stigma associated with it, information about assistive technology, disability etiquette and crisis prevention/ intervention. The presentation will include both lecture and interactive/audience participation components. Our workshops continuously evolve as we learn from participants' real experiences.

Instructors:

Tonya Hays-Martin is the Librarian at Fulton State Hospital and has worked in the mental health field for 21 years. Fulton State Hospital Library serves both professional staff and clients with severe and chronic mental illness. Ms. Hays-Martin is a graduate of William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri. Tonya was instrumental in developing the web-based training program, Librarian411 over the last five years.

Alan Nellis provides library services to clients in Missouri's only maximum security mental health facility. A professional musician by training, Alan has worked in the mental health field for over 30 years. He is especially interested in helping front-line library workers learn about crisis response and prevention. Mr. Nellis looks forward to sharing and learning in every live workshop.
