Description:
This workshop will cover the history of comics, including the classics and the different types of comics. Graphic fiction suitable for teens will be discussed as well as, Jewish graphic novels. There will be a panel discussion among three graphic literature authors, including Matt Fraction, Jason Aaron, and Ande Parks.

Instructor:
Joshua M. Neff is a Web Content Developer for the Johnson County Library, primarily responsible for JoCoKids, JoCoTeenScene and Homework Help. He is a cofounder of the Library Society of the World and blogs about technology, comics, games and other bits of pop culture and life at goblin cartoons.
Jason Aaron
Jason is an Eisner Award nominated comic book writer, creator of THE OTHER SIDE and SCALPED for DC/Vertigo, plus writer on WOLVERINE, GHOST RIDER and BLACK PANTHER for Marvel Comics. He was born in Alabama, but currently lives in the Kansas City area with his wife and two sons.
Mickey Coalwell
Mickey Coalwell is the Library Development Consultant for NEKLS, the Northeast Kansas Library system, located in Lawrence. He has had a lifelong interest in comics and graphic novels, and shamelessly promotes GN collections at library conferences, workshops and other professional gatherings. Aside from comics, Mickey's other passion is classical music. He has reviewed classical concerts for The Kansas City Star since 1996, and is an announcer for KXTR Classical 1660. He has one wife, one daughter and one cat.
Matt Fraction
In 2007 Matt won the Favorite Newcomer Writer Eagle Award and was nominated for an Eisner Award in April 2008 for his work on "The Sensational Spider-Man annual. He also shared a "Best New Series" nomination with Ed Brubaker and David Aja for their work on "Immortal Iron Fist". Formerly a resident of Charlotte, North Carolina, Fraction currently resides in Kansas City, Missouri, with his wife, writer Kelly Sue DeConnick. On September 9, 2007, their first child Henry Leo was born.
Andrea Kempf is a Librarian at the Johnson County Community College Library System.
Kim Patton is the YA Librarian for Kansas City Public Library.
Ande Parks
Most of Ande's career in comics has been spent as an inker working for nearly every major comic book publisher, on such titles as Wonder Woman, Superman, Daredevil, and Spider-Man. In recent years, though, he has also turned his attention to writing. In 2004, Oni Press published Ande's first original graphic novel, Union Station. The book deals with the events surrounding Kansas City's Union Station massacre, which took place in 1933. 2005 saw the publication of Ande's follow-up to Union Station, a return to the genre of historical fiction. Capote In Kansas. The book details the time Truman Capote spent in Kansas while he worked on his masterpiece, In Cold Blood. Ande Parks lives in Kansas with his lovely wife and two children.
