Elizabeth Moon: A Biography
Elizabeth Moon was
born in McAllen, a small town in extreme southern Texas on March 7, 1945. She began writing
as a young child, experimenting with picture books, musical comedy, and
adventure stories by the age of ten. Her
interest in science fiction began during junior high when a new student at her
school introduced her to the genre.Â
Although Moon wrote science fiction stories from that time on, she
didn't plan to become a professional author.Â
Her career ambitions on entering Rice University in 1963 centered on physics, but she ultimately graduated
with a B.A. in history. Several years
later, in 1975, she also earned a bachelor's degree in biology and did graduate
work in that same subject. Her work life
has been varied, ranging from a three-year stint in the Marines to city
alderman to rural paramedic. Moon's
first published fiction was a short story, ABCs
in Zero-G, that appeared in Analog
in 1986. Since 1988, Moon has published
numerous fantasy and science fiction novels and two collections of short
fiction. Her series include The Deed of Paksenarrion, Planet Pirates, The Legacy of Gird, The
Serrano Legacy, and Vatta's War. Remnant
Population (1996) was a Hugo nominee while her most recent novel, The Speed of Dark, won the 2003 Nebula
Award for best novel. Moon's other
interests include playing piano and accordian, riding horses, and
swimming. She lives with her husband
Richard and their son in Texas.
